Organic producers are certified organic through an approved Organic Certifying Agency according to the following Standards:
United States
The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) conducted a survey targeting all US Producers that are certified to a US approved certifying agency. The response rate for the total census count (15,806) was 60%.
- 5 million organic acres in the US in 2016
- 15 percent increase in certified acres from 2015 to 2016
- 14,217 Certified USA Organic Farms in 2016
- 11 percent increase in farm number from 2015 to 2016
- $7.6 billion in sales of organic commodities in 2016 (56% crops)
- 23 percent increase in sales from 2015 to 2016
- California has the highest number of farms, acreage, and sales
