Rock Phosphorus can be used in conventional and organic production systems. Fertoz supplies various size options for rock phosphorus. We quote these in mm, SGN or mesh sizes. Depending on product size application is common using an air seeder, fertilizer spreader or custom applicator. Apply in spring or fall or following a plow down or fallow year. Broadcast, broadcast and incorporate or apply in furrow. Apply according to soil requirements or broadcast at a recommended rate of 300 lbs/acre.

Longevity and availability

Rock phosphorus provides extended feeding throughout the growing season and prolonged nutrition into year 2 and 3 after application. Studies have shown multiple year benefit in year two and year three after initial application. Application can be undertaken in the fall or the spring of the year. In acidic soils, singular application of rock phosphate should be done prior to seeding to allow the soil, moisture and soil microbial population time to solubilize and render the phosphorus more available once the field is seeded in the spring. In neutral or high pH soils rock phosphate should be blended with other amendments to increase acidity and phosphorous availability.

Phosphorus and Intercropping

For plow downs, there are benefits of adding phosphorus to a field seeded to legumes. Phosphorus is important for many functions in the plant cell, one of them being transformation of energy in root nodules which is very important in legumes to improve nitrogen fixation rendering more nitrogen available in the soil for the cereal or alternate crop grown. Alternatively, legumes fix nitrogen to provide available nitrogen to the plant and improve soil microbe activity, improving uptake of phosphorus and other nutrients.
